John Black
At 17, John Black ran away from
his small backwoods Alabama town to join the American Expeditionary
Force heading to Europe in 1917. The “grand” adventure
turned into everlasting horror. After suffering a permanent facial
disfiguration, John returned home hoping to find peace in his old
life. When he returned, he found his entire town decimated by a polio
outbreak, and worse yet, his facial disfiguration prevented him from
finding work.
Turning to the West as a final escape, John traveled to the desert
to find a quiet living as a prospector. No one knows what happened
to him those first few years in the desert. Something finally pushed
him over the edge into criminal insanity. He was eventually captured,
found cowering in a corner of his small shack chewing on human flesh.
After being convicted of multiple counts of murder, John was sent
to ASLA for treatment. After being admitted, there is no further mention
of John except for one note in Dr. Ambrosi’s journal.
NOTE FROM DR. AMBROSI:
"The patient’s facial disfiguration is so
severe it is causing the other patients to fall into fits of psychosis.
In order to prevent this from happening, I have had a steel mask welded
around his face. Hopefully, this will also prevent him from eating
any more nurses."
